Laser Cutting

The Borgen Design Lab has a 60W Universal Laser Systems VLS 3.60 DT desktop laser cutter. This machine has a 12″ x 24″ bed and is great for rapidly prototyping small parts from thin (1/8″) sheets of acrylic and high-density fiberboard. Students enrolled in ME 351/352 are free to submit jobs to this machine using the form below.

Note that students are not allowed to run this machine. Instead, all cut jobs are handled by a head TA.

Before Submitting a Job

To submit jobs to this laser cutter, you are required to complete the DI Lab@Wendt Laser Cutter Training. This training is relatively short (~2 hours) but may require a week or so to schedule and complete, so please plan accordingly. Completing this training will give you a better appreciation for what laser cutters can do and help you design better parts.

In addition, you will need to follow the instructions outlined below when preparing cut files. These instructions will walk you through the necessary steps to create the proper .pdf file required for cutting your parts. Parts that do not adhere to these guidelines will be rejected and require resubmission.
